Marketing your book

When is the best time to start marketing? Now! In fact, you should have started yesterday! Even before you have anything published, start talking about your work in progress with some people and before you know it, you'll have a bunch of people excited to read it when it's done! A blog, Twitter, Facebook, tools are available at your disposal to start interacting with your future fans. And even if your book has been out and you think you've promoted it enough, there's always something else you can do to promote it to new readers.

Get your message together

You may already know the story for your book well, but what about the story behind the story? Figure out how to best describe what your book is about in various ways, from a 300-word description to a 140 character tweet. The same goes for your author bio. People often like reading about the author to get some insight into why they decided to write the particular story they're about to read. Make it clear what kind of author you are and what kind of work you do. Maybe you focus on a certain genre or format (novella, short stories, series-writing, comics, etc).

Put together a press kit

Prepare promotion materials for sending out to different publications and blogs that would want to talk about your book. Make sure you have things like a solid description, a good author bio, highres cover artwork, and proper links to buy or learn more about your work. And don't forget your Twitter and Facebook links.

Keep track of progress

Because you're trying to get sales of your book, you're essentially running a business. So when you try out different promotion techniques, treat it as such and keep track of what works and what doesn't and the results you get. Be persistent, don't get discouraged, there is no Secret formula. Just take small steps and don't be afraid to get creative and experiment with techniques.
